What are AEO, GEO, and SEO – and how do they affect your content marketing?

Content Marketing
Answer Engine Optimization, Generative Engine Optimization, and Search Engine Optimization. The reason it sounds confusing is because, well, it’s confusing. However, once you understand these different strategies, you can optimize your content to better suit the needs of your target audience, and yield better AISO (AI search optimization) results. So, what do AEO, GEO, and SEO mean in general, and for your content marketing in particular?
What is AEO?
While all content marketing and content optimization aims to provide users with answers, the purpose of AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is to provide answers to specific user questions.
AI tools such as Gemini or ChatGPT will select the best answers (from a multitude of sources) and present them at the top of the search results. When presenting the answer, it will ideally do so while quoting your exact content, or by citing your content and referring to you as the source.
Why Answer Engine Optimization matters:
- AEO helps raise online visibility.
- AEO builds user trust for your company, based on your content.
- Answer Engine Optimized content appears in AI-generated answers (such as in Copilot), voice search results (Alexa and Siri), and Google Featured Snippets.
How to use AEO in your content marketing
- Address specific customer queries in your content
Use customer questions as headings and subheadings, for example. - Prioritize specific answers when possible
When raising a question, answer it with clarity and authority in the next sentence, then elaborate on that immediate response. - Present an accessible, easily read content structure
Prioritize clear, concise, well-written paragraphs over long blocks of text. Include bullet points, FAQs, and lists when useful, without over-relying on them.
What is GEO?
AI tools look for multiple, trusted sources to combine, cite, and generate answers from. Through GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), companies can create and structure their content to help these AI systems generate better responses.
When searching for trusted sources, AI tools will seek to establish that trust through key data points, explanations, statements, and other extractable information which the AI tool is able to retrieve and present. Companies need to keep this in mind, and should use GEO to make their own content reliable and quotable.
AEO is used to provide direct answers to specific questions; SEO drives clicks and online traffic. The purpose of GEO is to make sure that AI can interpret, use, and cite your content.
Why Generative Engine Optimization matters:
- Summarized answers are only becoming more common and important, especially in terms of authority and brand visibility online.
- That visibility does not just come from good ranking, but from being cited.
- Generative Engine Optimized content appears in AI overviews (on Google, most notably) and similar summaries, which differ slightly depending on the AI model. What matters is the immediacy of the response: the user will receive an answer without having to click on any link.
How is GEO different from AEO?
The aim of GEO is to be used/cited within AI-generated responses, with several sources being combined into an AI response.
AEO is about having as exact and clear an answer as possible to a certain question, and having that answer selected by AI models. It is then presented to the user as the best answer to his or her question.
So, while there are similarities, even a potential overlap, they are not the same thing.
How to use GEO in your content marketing
- Clarity and coherence beyond buzzwords
Focus on the entirety of your content marketing, not just on keywords and terminology. AI models and – most importantly – your readers will want to know that you understand not only your field, but what your audience needs to know about it. - Prioritize specific answers when possible
Same as with AEO. Raise specific questions, answer them clearly and directly, and build your arguments or greater narrative from that. - Present relevant, updated content on your website and in your SoMe channels
Sounds obvious, but most companies do not update their websites, blogs, vlogs, customer case catalogs, et cetera, often enough. In their search for the right information to cite and use, AI models will prioritize updated content.
What is SEO?
While most people are probably familiar with Search Engine Optimization (SEO), it’s important to consider what it actually means for your content marketing, especially now.
In a nutshell, the better the content and structure of your website, the higher search engines like Google will rank it, and help drive organic traffic to you. Great SEO allows search engines to understand your content, and match it to what users are looking for.
Search Engine Optimization has always been, and will increasingly be, about much more than keywords.
Why Search Engine Optimization (still) matters:
- SEO helps smaller companies compete with bigger competitors, not least since organic search still drives most website traffic.
- SEO builds visibility and credibility through top rankings, including featured snippets and AI overviews.
- AI-generated answers are increasing, but great SEO – just as much as AEO and GEO – also helps increase a company’s chances of being used as a trusted source. These methods go hand in hand, and should all be taken into account.
How to use SEO in your content marketing
- Focus on content quality, and follow a proper content marketing plan
No one likes AI slop, and many are actively avoiding it. Be someone your prospects and customers turn to for expertise, clarity, and reliability. And variation, too. You have a lot of assets, insights and experience; let your audience know that. - Keyword optimization, but with credibility and creativity
Using keywords in your content is as relevant as ever, but all of your content should be well-written, relevant, and up-to-date. That is what AI models and users alike are actively looking for. - Always keep the user perspective and user experience in mind
Your content, regardless of format, should be easy to understand and engage with. What is your audience looking for, and is that what you provide them with? Original, authoritative content builds customer trust, and maintains customer loyalty.
