1. Read as much as you can
If you want to improve your writing, you should read; preferably as much as you can. Read everything that interests you, but try to go beyond only one or two formats. News, blogs, magazines, novels, poetry. You will learn a lot from the variety alone, and what you want to incorporate in your own content marketing. Also, importantly, you will become better at understanding how you like to both approach and be addressed by a text. This is crucial for writing better content marketing, and for addressing your customers and their needs.
2. Write as often as you can
In order to get better at something, you have to practise it. Writing is very much like that. If your content marketing does not sound quite right, practise it until it does. Again, it is about finding that balance between being informative and knowledgeable on the one hand, and clear and including on the other.
3. Know the purpose of your text right from the start
If you are going to write a text for your website or social media channel, for example, start by deciding on the purpose of the text before you begin typing. It will make the writing process easier, and the final product better. Keep the purpose in the back of your mind throughout the writing process to make sure you stay on track, and lead the reader to the conclusion you want them to reach.
4. Include details carefully
Eloquently written details make your text more interesting and vibrant. Just don’t sprinkle those details too generously over your text, or they will be a distraction – or even annoying. Work on a few details that you think or know are of particular importance to your target audience. These details will raise your credibility, underline that you know what you are talking about, and show that you care about the topic you are discussing.
5. Let your text rest a bit before scrutinizing it
Once you have finished writing a text (long or short), do not publish it right away. Wait a little while, at least an hour, and then revisit it. You will find things you will want to change, but more importantly, you will probably know how to improve them too. Look mainly for difficult or unnecessary expressions that you can simplify, replace, or remove altogether. Whatever you are writing about, it needs to be accessible to your audience; especially if the subject matter is complex. That is not to say that you should “dumb it down”. What you should do, is to make it as clear, reasonable, and rewarding to read about as possible.
6. Read your text out loud
Also, when you go back to your text, read it out loud to yourself once. Hearing how it actually sounds when read is a very good way of finding those little snags where your text just does not quite work the way it should. It can be minor details, or a paragraph that should be edited, placed elsewhere in the article, or simply left out. But reading your text out loud will also make you more aware of its strengths, and how you can make it even more engaging, convincing, and relevant to your target audience.
