Finding the best engine or propulsion type for your vessel can be complicated. So we made it easy.

Marine Propulsion Software (MPS) is a unique sales tool, developed by Volvo Penta and Skapa. Users can try out different engine configurations or propulsion types, and receive an instant performance prediction from MPS.

Challenge

Volvo Penta wanted to update an existing desktop client with new functions, including improved licence handling, simplified program updates, and an improved user interface.

Solution

Skapa rebuilt the desktop client in .NET, more specifically WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation). Skapa created a web-based backend as well, where the necessary data for the desktop client can be entered: configurations of new drivelines, performance information (such as fuel consumption diagrams), and more. By collecting and making this data available in smaller data packages – new databases, for example – the desktop client can easily install them as updates. This means that the existing client can be updated and enhanced continually, with no need for any new clients or client versions.

Volvo Penta also wanted to include a reference database of Sea Trial-reports, containing comparative performance data. This allows predictions in Volvo Penta MPS to be compared with vessels with comparable characteristics, based on data from a vast number of concrete, real-life boat tests. New test results can be added to the backend portal, exported as releases, and be downloaded to Volvo Penta MPS.

Result

Volvo Penta MPS is a popular calculation tool that is easy to use and enhance. It meets the demands of both Volvo Penta, boat builders, designers and Volvo Penta's dealers, both in terms of complexity and user friendliness.
